Variational representations for N -cyclically monotone vector fields
Given a convex bounded domain Ω in R and an integer N ≥ 2, we associate to any jointly Nmonotone (N − 1)-tuplet (u1, u2, ..., uN−1) of vector fields from Ω into R, a Hamiltonian H on R × R...×R, that is concave in the first variable, jointly convex in the last (N − 1) variables such that for almost all x ∈ Ω, (u1(x), u2(x), ..., uN−1(x)) = ∇2,...,NH(x, x, ..., x). Moreover, H is N -sub-antisymm...
متن کاملA variational theory for monotone vector fields
Monotone vector fields were introduced almost 40 years ago as nonlinear extensions of positive definite linear operators, but also as natural extensions of gradients of convex potentials. These vector fields are not always derived from potentials in the classical sense, and as such they are not always amenable to the standard methods of the calculus of variations. We describe here how the selfd...
متن کاملMonotone Point-to-Set Vector Fields
We introduce the concept of monotone point-to-set field in Riemannian manifold and give a characterization, that make clear in this definition the occult geometric meaning. We will show that the sub-differential operator of a Riemannian convex function is a monotone point-to-set field. The concept of directional derivative, which appears already in other publications, plays an important role in...
متن کاملTopological Representations of Vector Fields
This chapter gives an overview on topological methods for vector field processing. After introducing topological features for 2D and 3D vector fields, we discuss how to extract and use them as visualization tools for complex flow phenomena. We do so both for static and dynamic fields. Finally, we introduce further applications of topological methods for compressing, simplifying, comparing, and ...
متن کاملBlurred maximal cyclically monotone graphs and bipotentials
Let X be a reflexive Banach space and Y its dual. In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a bipotential for a blurred maximal cyclically monotone graph. Equivalently, we find a necessary and sufficient condition on φ ∈ Γ0(X) for that the differential inclusion y ∈ B̄(ε) + ∂φ(x) can be put in the form y ∈ ∂b(·, y)(x), with b a bipotential.
